The nice guy that finished first, founder of Glue / Ark and previously Twitpic.
Great suggestion 👍 I have this on the roadmap to pull child and parent Drops to build a better thread view. Thanks for the input!
Do you have any outside tools or servers sending email into pingly that uses your pingly email as the from address?
Hmm ok I'll take a deeper look now. Can you email me the from and to email addresses shown on that email to firstname.lastname@example.org? Thanks!
Ok thanks for that info, I'll keep my eye on that. It shouldn't send those to you, but it does not appear to be phishing / spam. Thanks again!
Looks to be legit, it's a system email notification, but I'm not for sure why it sent you that. - Does it send you that everytime you send an email? - How did you send the email through Pingly that caused that email? (web app, iOS app, inbound SMTP) Thanks for the info!
Great suggestion, that is something I have on my ToDo. In your use-case, would a browser notification type suffice or are you looking for out-of-band notifications like email etc?
No plans at the moment for chat, possibly a private messaging system or private Drops. However that could change 🤓
Ah ok! Yes you are right, I need to implement that on mobile. Thanks for letting me know 😀
If you hover over a Drop, you'll see an ellipses in the bottom left. If you click that, there is a delete option there.
Yeah great idea! That's on the roadmap along with timelines that auto-refresh and show you have new Drops
Good suggestions! To help me understand the music player concept better: Would that be if you played an audio Drop, that it would pop down into a player of some sort that would stay playing as you navigate around Glue?
Cool thanks, I'll take a look into our image handling. I remember a large image being posted in the past and it blew up our image processing...I think it ran out of memory 🤓 Will figure it out!
...One of the issues with edits is how to handle someone posting a Drop, it gets reposted/rippled, then the author changing the Drop to something completely different or malicious even 🤦♂️ So either X minutes to edit or remove all likes/ripples if it's edited but that later is not my favorite
For blog Drops yes, since given their length it is inevitable typos or corrections will occur. For short Drops, still figuring out the best way forward, either a time based edit so you can edit it up to x minutes or something...
Hey Justin! When Twitter took over Twitpic in 2014 they retained the images and the URLs so any Twitpic link in your Twitter timeline should still work, however a way to download your images in bulk was discontinued sometime after they acquired it. Hope that helps!
Almost done! It's taken longer to do this feature than I expected with building a semi-rich text editor 🤦♂️ Basically there will be a "Quote" button in the Drop compose that you can share quoted text with highlighting / color themes or you can share code snippets with auto syntax highlighting
Looks very interesting! @maximilien posted a photo of this not too long ago too. I have a fond memory of walking by the Arch with my wife in 2019 when visited. We'd just come from the Eiffel tower which had a storm ⚡️ brewing behind it and it was beautiful! Looking forward to going back
Signups are back up, let me know if you're able to create your account now - pingly.com/signup
I'll reopen signups tomorrow between 10am and 4pm EST. Send me a drop to let me know if you're able to get your account created. That work ok for you?
Oh my bad, now I see. Right now the way to do that is to just create a new account with the new domain. Roadmap: I'd like to have the ability to add (or remove) domains under one Organization. Signups are disabled right now while I'm fixing a spam attack, but I can help you setup a new one
Looks beautiful! I lived for a month in Angers which isn't too far from there. We've gone back to visit 2 more times too, we love it! 🇫🇷
Are you wanting to change your username? I can do that for you (still working on the settings page to do that). What do you want it changed to?
Glad to hear! I’ve enjoyed the 10 years I’ve been here 😀 P.S. Love your blog post on Glue. How long have you been a health coach and how was taking the leap to start your own biz? I’m trying to drop body fat and put on muscle currently 😅
Thanks for letting me know! Can you have them send me an email at email@example.com and I can get them setup. The signup is disabled due to a recent spam signup attack that I'm working to fix 🤓
I agree. I'm very much interested in the ads vs no-ads topic as I want to figure that out for @Glue. Some are very polar on the issue, i.e. must be no ads or must be free, but I think there's a middle ground somewhere that can appease both without sacrificing user privacy (at least I hope! 😀)
I hear you on ads and product placement, however I think a good way to use video (Youtube, Tiktok, whatever) is showing valuable content that's related to your product or business. Example of this is Thornton Hundred & showing how they build their bikes: youtube.com/watch?v=5lcD7QAyw9c
There's not a "discovery" section so to speak yet, but that's a good idea 👍 Users or topics to follow would be a good addition
No prob! I appreciate all the help you've given. I'll do more research into my setup, I'm probably making it overcomplicated 🤦♂️
Basically I'm trying to accomplish: - Have an ASN to announce to peer - /24 is assigned to ASN - Each host behind the router does own firewall & NAT'ing - Each host has containers which get assigned a static public / private IP I guess router with no NAT'ing?
From a high-level view, basically if I have a linux box acting as a router it will: - Sit in front of our switch/hosts - Establish a BGP session with our upstream peer - Route incoming traffic to our switch/hosts Basically just need a physical host with at least an in/out nic port?
I'll check those out 👍 they look nice. My current line of thinking is (if we do ads) they would be native to Glue (i.e. promoted Drops or something like that). That way user data or privacy leaks can't happen since no 3rd party system is involved. Thanks for sending those over!
Yeah 🤯 thankfully hers was still under warranty. Also you can't let them sit without being charged for more than a week or so. Apparently it damages the battery and causes it to fail or fail early. This was an 1st gen, not for sure if anything is fixed in the 2nd gen.
Trying to get the gas co to repair the broken ones. Supposedly they're responsible for them, but said they aren't (new co took over recently). City estimates 100k to fix. Hoping to find a way to save them as the light they give is very unique! Alternative is modern LED lights for that street 🤮
Staying in the CHS area. John’s Island is where I’d like to move to with some more room than we have downtown now…babies take up more room than I thought 😋
Saw this today inside Fort Moultrie from WWII era and thought to share with you 📻
Visited last summer (in 107F heat) beautiful area, great learning of history and the barn animals were an extra treat.
Ok cool! Somehow the Drop compose didn't reset itself after posting the other Drop or somehow that image was in there...I'll take a look, thanks for letting me know!
Oh wait sorry, now I see...it posted the image again with the second Drop with the blog link?
Thanks for sharing, I think I'm missing the specific bug, can you point it out? Maybe I need more coffee 😉
1kbit! Imagine if the makers of these chips could see then that a text editor (electron apps!) can take up GBs of ram now 😁
Niiice, good stuff dude! I had a HIT timer app that I would use on my stationary but something like peloton seems a lot more fun.
Is that the backyard of the Nathaniel Russell House? We did a museum mile pass this year of many of the historic homes, very fun, learned a lot.
They are pushed up, similar to Reddit. The new and popular tabs mostly match until more Drops flow into the categories. I’m reworking the categories to be hashtag based and may tweak the algorithm’s time “weight”. Ex: votes on older Drops weigh less.
This is fixed now 🙌 Search will detect when you're searching for just a username and will search for Drops by that user.
I'll work on fixing that. Right now search is searching inside the Drop text body, but I'll add username searches to show Drops posted by a user. Thanks for letting me know! 👍
You'll also have to bolt on your own UI, however I would imagine Wordpress probably has a plugin for that.
I originally looked for something more lightweight than ES, but all the ones I tried did not have the features or maturity of ES. ES is a beast, from features to resource usage BUT it works the best I've seen so far and can scale from 5k to 5 billion+ docs just by sharding.
I've pushed a fix for this, can you confirm it's aligned correctly? I was unable to re-create on my Firefox so I'm hoping it worked! 🤞
I'll give it a try! That would def save on Adobe CC subscriptions for my wife who uses photoshop and illustrator, which are separate subscriptions!
I haven’t used Figma yet, still in photoshop and sketch but maybe it’s time to give it a try 🤷♂️
Currently 25MB limited via Nginx. I'm still testing out how much our backend image processing can handle. One of the features we may offer for pro accounts are high-def image uploading. However for audio uploads, I will up the upload limit soon as our backend doesn't have to process much for that.
Search is probably the next thing to go live, some other new features are relying on that to be released too ⚡️
Images are capped at 570px by 300px for the timeline view, no cap on height in the Drop view. I'm working on a way to view full size images too with no width restriction when you click to "view full size" basically.
Yeah, I think private Drops is probably how I'll do it vs a separate messaging system which is a bit redundant. Re bugs/improvements: - I'll work on adding paste image to Compose - Looking into those view bugs you mentioned Thanks!
Sounds like the back-end is struggling to keep up? I don't have any experience with MongoDB, but I've generally used mysql / redis and they've been pretty fast with not much delay. Under load is a different story, but generally Redis cache layer has solved that for me.
Yeah, shoot me an email firstname.lastname@example.org or Twitter DM works...some sort of private Drop or private messaging system on Glue will probably happen eventually 😀
I'll look into this. It *should* apply the "like" to the original drop. If you hit the Ripple button again, it should un-Ripple the Drop. I'll test on my local dev box! 👍
I’ve got so much stuff I wanna do with the blog feature that I wish I had more hands to program faster 😆
Good catch! Working on a fix for the scrolling issue and I'm also working on a "draft" feature for Drops which would work great with the "save/discard" idea. Thanks for the feedback!
Ruby is just a fantastic language to write in and Rails is the best framework (IMO) for building something quickly and easily. Ruby got a bad wrap for being slow but it’s fine for most cases and DB is usually first bottle neck in what I’ve seen that caching can fix.
Sure! it’s built on Rails with redis for fast timeline delivery. Lots of new features coming for blogging, custom domains, paid accounts and threading conversations 🔥
Logging calories was the best thing to help me lose weight and stay under daily intake goal. It’s surprising how many calories are in foods I didn’t realize.
Thanks for letting me know! That’s a bug for sure. I’ll work on a fix 😀 Thanks again!
Yes, I’m working to rework that to show parent it’s replied to and for replies to show first child reply if present. Thanks for the feedback!
Let me know how you like it! Getting ready to dive into setting up search and server analytics soon that will need to be real-time. Still trying to decide between ElasticSearch or just using full-text search in our current RDBMS. Downside is we'll quickly outgrow the later as data increases.
I still have my data structures book from one of my C programming classes in college...almost vintage 😆
Good to know! Glue runs on our own hardware we colocate which I’ve been managing myself but I foresee the need for someone else to manage that in the near future. Will be sure to keep you in mind 👍 Runnning Linux with LXC and OpenVSwitch for our “virtualization”. What’s your preferred stack?
Great suggestion 😀 iOS and Android on the roadmap and I’m working on an unread notification display too. Good stuff! What’s the smiley feature?
sending here to me works great, I’ll log that to be fixed...thanks for heads up! 👍
Great blog! This low level stuff is fascinating. I’ve only briefly tried to understand assembly, now I’ve got the urge to dive in again. Keep us posted on your progress!
Good idea, I have an edit mode planned for blog posts as they will most definitely need it 😀 Just working out some edge-cases. Thanks for the feedback!
I see that too 🤔 I’ll look at tweaking the algorithm for our current drop flow. The algorithm behaves better for higher content flows.
It shows anything that’s been added to a drop category but in chronological new order vs score order like popular. There aren’t many drops posted into a category at the moment so it looks a little skewed. Maybe I can tweak to show all drops even without category.
Thanks Peter for signing up for Glue!I like your blog post on my follower stats 😆 very thorough! Scylla looks very interesting, I need to read up on the latest releases as I’ve been stuck in a code editor the past few months. Cheers!
Yes please keep them coming! 😃 this helps tremendously and is greatly appreciated 👍
Good idea! probably match the UI of the floating bottom nav like the home/notifications and poplar nav you think?
I noticed that on mobile too which seems to have a shorter session time. I’ll work on adding a remember me login checkbox Thanks for letting me know!
Yeah +1! Rich links would be nice. Agreed on tracking too, I'm curious how each service enables that. I know for generic links posted on Twitter, it looks for specific Twitter meta tags for title, snippet, featured image. I've got it marked down for feature request! 👍
Related to the above post: Work is planned to make threading and following conversations easier to follow too
Sure! I'll shoot you an email to get details 👍 Out of curiosity what Ghost plan/pricing were you on? I'm working out how to price our "plus/pro" accounts and what features to offer.
I'll check the logs, I think that's the largest image that's ever been tried on Glue 😆 I can tweak our image processing to handle more. I'm working on another iteration of the Drop compose that will show upload progress too. Great feedback, thank you!
Working on a paid acct which would give extra features (stats on your Drops, more blog features, custom domain, etc) I want to make sure Glue always has a free option to ensure everyone can use it, regardless of their economic position I'll put out a blog post to outline privacy in more detail too
Glad to hear! 😀 On privacy: - No trackers (working to keep our uBlock block count to zero as it is now) - We won't sell your data - I'd like to not do ads, if we had to they'd be contextual, and privacy respecting, not tracking based (Continued...)
P.S. beautiful photo, I love photography of clouds / storms Your photos are up on the popular tab too with some upvotes 👍
Welcome to Glue! Image previews have a fixed height in the timeline view but when you click a drop the main view will show it full height... I’m also working on a click to view full size option too 📷
P.S. My wife and I love Paris, she used to teach english in a near by town. Hoping to go back soon 😀
Are you using Glue from a mobile device or desktop? On desktop if you hover over a Drop an ellipses will show that will give you the delete option. I'm working on adding it back to mobile. It was removed temporarily to fix a tapping bug.
Working on improving the Drop dialog to show posting/upload status when uploading media and to redirect or show the new Drop that was posted. Thanks for the feedback! 😀
I had Glue going through Cloudflare, but now everything is going straight to our servers. Our datacenter is centrally located in the US so maybe due to the distance and the "double" request from You -> Cloudflare -> Glue's servers and back it was causing the latency 🤷♂️
I'm going to do a post on Indie Hackers soon. I've got some ideas around using the "popular" tab to show case what everyone is working on and get some exposure for projects 👍 Also, any help on getting makers on Glue would be greatly appreciated! 😆
Hey Andrei! I'm glad you like it and thanks for joining 😀 My twitter following is mostly from the Twitpic days and kinda pre-dates the maker crowd, also I think many of the accounts are dormant now. However I'd like to get that community on Glue!...
Love the colors 👍 I’m working to fix the duplicate drop posting, with an updated compose dialogue. Sorry for the issue!
Testing out a new network setup, do you see any difference in load time for Glue?
Testing out some new network settings for Glue. Do you see any difference in load time by chance?
Recently added code sharing / highlighting to the blog feature. I’ll do a drop about that soon 🔥
Thanks for the info 👍 I'll start debugging and try to find the cause of this and make it faster.
Good idea! A new homepage is high up on my ToDo list too. I'll make note of that to include a section on Glue's privacy and protection of user data. Cheers!
Thank you for letting me know! I want to find the root of that issue too. Are you on mobile or desktop browser? Also what general location are you browsing from? I want to test some latency issues. I appreciate the feedback!
Curious, what would you pay to Twitter or Instagram to not see ads? No extra features, just no ads.
Yeah good suggestions! When you say active, make the home button show a highlighted color to show you’re currently on that page? Are you on a desktop browser now or mobile?
I think that’s a great idea and I’m surprised others like Twitter or Facebook don’t offer a way to pay for no ads.
...I don’t care for ads myself and if possible would like to find a way to fund Glue without them! Hope that helps 😀 Thank you for joining Glue and I appreciate the questions!
...On revenue: I’ve got some ideas on a “pro” account which would add some features around analytics on your Drops etc Ads aren’t ruled out but nothing planned on that as of now. If we did do ads they would be contextual and not tracking based and nothing that invades privacy (Continued...)
Thank you Atmos! Makes me happy to hear you like the UI 😊 On privacy: no trackers on Glue and we won’t sell your data. If you use uBlock or similar you should see zero things blocked on Glue since we don’t have anything embedded (Continued in next drop...)
Thanks for the feedback! 🙌 So you want to see the parent drop (message) that was replied to from the timeline view?
Thank you for joining Glue! Are the page loads itself slow or is just the image loading? Thank you for letting me know, I want to make sure it loads fast 👍
